Course of Study for the Year:
1st 9 weeks:
- All matter is made up of atoms.
- Atoms of the same element have the same properties.
- Substances change in state of matter when the motion of the atoms changes.
- Light, sound and earthquakes involve energy that travels as waves.
- Heat involves energy that transfers from warmer to cooler objects through the collision of particles.
- Electrical energy involves the movement of electrons.
- Materials conduct or insulate energy at different rates.
2nd 9 weeks:
- The Earth and moon move.
- The positions of the Earth, moon, and sun create cycles.
- Different planets have different properties.
- Humans have used many different instruments to study space.
- Humans benefit from space exploration
3rd 9 weeks:
- The Earth is comprised of different layers.
- The structure of the Earth has a strong impact on the development of life.
- The earth’s geographic structures are formed by the movement of tectonic plates.
- Soil composition is directly related to the type of life it can sustain.
- Human interaction with their environments affects air, water, and soil quality.
4th 9 weeks:
- Energy from the sun travels to producers, then to consumers and decomposers
- Plants respond to external stimuli in various ways.
- Everything in an organism’s environment can be classified as either biotic or abiotic.
- An organism’s survival is dependent on the interactions with the factors in its environment.
- Plants have different parts.
- Plants reproduce sexually.
- Plants make their own food.
- Plants respond to their environment.
